About

How we vet, and why you can trust it

Buy It For Life exists for one question: what should I buy so I never have to buy it again? We answer it the slow way. We read the durability communities and weigh contenders against the things that actually decide whether an object lasts. Today every recommendation is drawn from that owner consensus, clearly labeled as such. When we test a product hands-on ourselves, we label that too.

Two different things live on this site. Our guides apply the judgment below and are labeled Tested or Community-cited so you always know which. The department shortlists are ranked by how often each brand is mentioned across the durability communities: a community signal, not our own verdict.

The five things we judge

  • Longevity. How long it actually survives real use, not spec-sheet promises.
  • Repairability. Can it be fixed, and are parts available?
  • Warranty. What the maker will actually honor, and how painful the claim is.
  • Resale & heritage. Does it hold value and get handed down?
  • Materials & construction. What it is made of and how it is put together.

Tested vs community-cited

Every guide is labeled. Tested means we owned and used the product: the photos, measurements and long-term notes are ours. Community-cited means we synthesized owner consensus from durability communities and said so plainly. We never claim hands-on experience we do not have, so today every guide on the site is community-cited; we have not published a hands-on Tested review yet.

How we make money

Some links on this site are affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you. Affiliate links never change a recommendation or its ranking: our picks come from durability-community consensus, not from who pays. Our incentive is to send you to something you will not need to replace, because a site about durable goods only works if you trust it for years.

Questions, answered honestly

How are these picks ranked?
By how often each brand is mentioned across the 4,142 durability-community comments we analyzed (captured July 2026). It is a mention-frequency signal from the durability community, not our own testing, and never a paid placement.
Have you tested them yourselves?
No, not yet, and we label it. Everything on the site is currently community-cited: it synthesizes owner consensus from durability communities. If we publish a hands-on review, it will be marked "Tested", with our own photos and notes.
Do you use affiliate links?
Yes. Some links are affiliate links: as an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you. They are labeled, and they never change a recommendation or its ranking.
Why is a brand I love missing or ranked low?
The ranking is built from mention frequency, so newer or niche brands can rank low or be absent even when they are excellent. A low count is a weak signal, not a verdict.
